Year 1 went to the Grove to learn a bit more about what houses and homes were like in the past.
The children were history detectives, looking for clues to tell them whether the Gibb family, who lived at the Grove were rich or poor. We decided that they were rich because they had maids; they used a bell to tell the maids what they wanted; they had a special box which had tea in it; they had lots of silver ornaments; they had a rug made from an animal’s fur; they had a piano and lots of lovely furniture.
Then we learned about the jobs that maids would do… Monday was wash-day so we had to learn how to use a dolly tub and posser and a washboard. We had to wring out all the water afterwards and it was hard work! After that, we beat the carpets because they didn’t have any vacuum cleaners in the olden days.
We even found a bird’s nest in the water pump with six eggs in it!
