Year 1 had a visit from the firefighters at Peel Fire Station. They have come to help us burn our Tudor houses down, just like it would have happened in 1666 when the Great Fire of London happened. We watched as Thomas Farriner’s baker’s shop in Pudding Lane started to burn and then, the flames spread until all our houses were all burned down. Then one of the firemen put his hose onto the burning embers and we watched as all the thick smoke spread.
Afterwards, they showed us round the fire engine, put on the sirens which were VERY loud and we were able to use the small hoses to spray water and then we used the big hose which could spray water right up into the trees! That was GREAT fun!
We all got to sit in the driver’s seat of the engine too – I think some of Year 1 might want to become firefighters now…
We learned how to stay safe if there is a fire and what to do if we ever need to call for a fire engine to help.
Thank you to our five firefighting friends for helping us to learn!
