Investing in Children, Investing in the Future!
Find out what the Shearwaters have been learning in Science, English, History and Design Technology during the Autumn term...
In Science, Shearwaters were looking at the human digestive system. We used a zip-lock bag and a pair of tights to mimic the route food takes through the body. As we went along, we ticked off key vocabulary related to the process.
In History, we have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians. Once we had looked at the differences between BC and AD and learned about some key historical events in Egyptian history, the children were given several key events without the dates and had to use their reasoning skills to place them on a timeline. Later, we revealed the correct dates so the children could see how accurate their predictions were.
In our writing unit, the Shearwaters worked in groups to workshop interesting phrases they could use in their writing, thinking about what they might see, hear and feel in an Egyptian tomb. They then shared their ideas, which we displayed for them to use in their writing
The Shearwaters’ STEAM project coincided with Hop tu Naa, so they created ‘moot’ shadow puppets. We recapped the terms translucent, transparent and opaque, and tested which materials would be best for their shadow puppets. The children then designed their ‘moot’ shadow puppets and constructed them. Those who do not celebrate Hop tu Naa created their own designs.
