PSHE and RSE at St Johns School
PSHE stands for personal, social, health and economic education.
RSE stands for relationship and sex education.
Purpose
PSHE education helps give children and young people the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives in the future.
Educating children with knowledge and practical skills appropriate to their age, will allow them to reflect on their own values and attitudes and it will also allow them to explore the complex range of values and attitudes they will encounter in society.
PSHE makes a significant contribution to children’s personal, moral, social, and cultural development, teaching them life-long knowledge and skills needed to be a successful citizen in the future.
Teaching and Learning
At St Johns we have a whole school approach to PSHE and RSE and we follow the Kapow Primary’s PSHE scheme, which supports the PSHE Association programme of study.
PSHE is taught in discrete lessons by the class teacher or it may sometimes be taught using a cross-curricular approach - linking with other subjects.
The Kapow Primary RSE and PSHE scheme of work has been designed as a spiral curriculum where key areas are revisited each year.
This ensures progression of skills, knowledge, and understanding across year groups.
The following topics will be taught across the three terms;
• Family and relationships
• Health and wellbeing
• Safety and the changing body
• Citizenship
• Economic wellbeing
